Desire

Your desire for your lover –
          Your longing to be one with an other –
That is a reflection of God’s longing for you:
          An invitation to desire God in return

Your sacrificial outpouring of watchful care
          Toward the child of your body
Is a faint negative of God’s care for you;

And the cry of an orphaned or unloved child,
          Wandering dirty and unfed
Is the echo of God’s own need to feed –
          and to be fed –
          in a marriage of mutual belonging.

The beautiful love-names you ascribe to God,
          God also ascribes to you,
As the Spirit calls forth your new beginning,
          creates your mind like that of Christ,
          calling you not servant but friend,
          calling you “beloved child!”
