Receiving the Gift of Compassionate Love

Christmas, December 28
Read Isaiah 54:8b, 10

The love of God takes me one step beyond creativity.  To enter into a deeper relationship with God requires accepting God’s gift of compassion: the compassion that led God to become man in order to prove his love and compassion by entering into, taking on, and bearing my pain. Still today God enters into pain with groanings that cannot be uttered – and God invites me to follow him there:  “If you would truly know and love me, learn my pain – by entering into and sharing the pain of others.”

Meditation:  If I try to ignore pain or cheer up the hurting person with easy smiles and  promises of “a brighter day tomorrow,” I accomplish nothing.  But if I acknowledge the reality of the pain and the awfulness of the pain, and if I enter into it to embrace it and share it, I discover Christ already there, bearing the pain and proclaiming the joyful birth that comes after labor, and the joyful victory Christ has already won over all pain!
